The minimalist approach allows you to perfect the basics, while still finishing with a highly functional, lifetime tool.

Class description

In this one day bladesmithing course, you will be reproducing an historic knife from the Viking period. You will start with a bar of raw high-carbon steel and, through the process of heating and hammering, you will end the day with a fully sharpened, tempered, ready to use blacksmith’s knife. This course is great for beginners and for those who wish to step into the world of bladesmithing like a Viking.

There is no wooden handle, so the emphasis will be on using a range of hammer techniques, and some grinding to refine your knife with miminal tools necessary. We will discuss honing and sharpening techniques in order to maintain a razor edge on your finished tool.

All equipment & materials are provided for this class.

Suitable PPE is provided during this class, including:

  • Earmuffs
  • Safety glasses
  • P2 dust mask

However, if you’d prefer to wear your own, you’re most welcome to bring it along.

Tea, coffee and fruit will be provided.

Please bring your own lunch. If you’d like to buy lunch, there are a few shops located 5-10mins walk from the workshop.

What to wear

  • Please wear covered shoes - they don't need to be steel-capped.
  • Please don't wear particularly loose clothing e.g. baggy sleeves or long skirts. These present additional risks when working around lit forges.
