Forge your own heirloom-quality kitchen utility knife in this hands-on two-day workshop, learning every step from forging and heat treating to grinding, handle making, and sharpening. Guided by myself and renowned fine furniture maker, Phoebe Everill, you will leave with a unique finished knife and the skills behind it.

Class description

A hands-on and fun workshop on how to forge a unique kitchen knife. This workshop is suitable for absolute beginners but some physical output will be required.

In this course, you will be guided in safely forging a high carbon steel billet into a finished kitchen knife. We will go through each process from forging, to heat treating, grinding, handle shaping and sharpening. Phoebe Everill will then lead the handle shaping, sharpening and fitting of the handle.

Day one will focus on the forging and grinding steps, while day two will involve handling and finishing work.

You will leave with a hand forged, heirloom quality kitchen utility knife and the skills to make one.

Tea, coffee and biscuits are provided for morning & afternoon tea.

Please bring your own lunch. If you’d like to buy lunch, Malmsbury Bakery or Glenlyon General Store are great options (each are a 10 minute drive away). Glenlyon General Store is not open on Tuesdays.
