Learn the complete process of making a knife from a bar of raw steel. From forging through to shaping, attaching a handle and sharpening the blade – you’ll end the day with an heirloom-quality knife ready for use in your kitchen!

Class description

In this course, you will forge an heirloom kitchen knife from a bar of high-carbon steel and locally milled hardwood, ready for use in your kitchen. You will learn all of the steps required to make a knife from start to finish including forging, heat treating, tempering, grinding, sharpening and shaping handles. By completing this course, you will have a clear idea of every step involved in making heirloom kitchenware.

In addition to forging the blade and shaping the handle, we will discuss heat treatment, the different properties of different steels, handle ergonomics and aesthetics, sharpening techniques to maintain a perfect edge and more.

This course is great for beginners who wish to build confidence with tools while producing a lifetime kitchen tool and for those with experience who wish to level up their knife making game.
